Replacing one of your hips or knees is major surgery so it's really important that you understand what it involves and what to expect afterwards. It's also important to prepare yourself before surgery, both by staying healthy and by setting up your home to be safe and easy to get around when you leave hospital.
Canterbury DHB and the national Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Collaborative have prepared some booklets to help you to prepare for your joint replacement surgery. The whole orthopaedics team – nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, surgeons and anaesthetists – prepared these booklets so you would have the best chance of a good outcome from your surgery.
The booklets explain how to prepare for surgery, the risks of surgery, what will happen on the day of your operation and what to expect as you recover. By following the advice in the booklets and completing the checklist and goals, you'll be in the best position to recover well from your surgery.
You should bring the booklets with you to all your appointments and when you come into hospital for your operation.
You'll be given printed copies of the booklets. You can also click the images below to open or download the booklets.
The videos on the next page will also help you prepare for your surgery and understand what to expect.
