Online mobility action programme for osteoarthritis

Hōtaka kori mo ngā tangata kaikōiwi

The Mobility action programme for osteoarthritis (MAP) is a free 8-week programme. It is for people with osteoarthritis that affects their hip or knee. It has been shown to help people move more easily and be able to do more in their everyday lives.

If MAP is right for you, your general practice team can refer you to the programme. An allied health professional such as your chiropractor, dietitian, occupational therapist, osteopath, physiotherapist or podiatrist can also refer you. Once they receive the referral, the MAP coordinator will contact you.

The online mobility action programme for osteoarthritis (online MAP) is for people who cannot or would prefer not to attend the programme in the community.

What to expect from online MAP

Online MAP is a free 8-week programme that you can do at home.

At each session, a physiotherapist talks about a variety of topics to help you learn how to manage osteoarthritis. They also show you exercises that you should do at home between the sessions. Each weekly session takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

Joining MAP sessions by Zoom

The sessions are held as interactive live webinars using the Zoom video platform. To take part, you will need an email address and a stable internet connection.

You will also need a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone with a speaker. Most laptops, tablets and mobile phones have what is needed. Most desktop computers have built-in speakers (often in the screen). Ideally you will also have a camera and microphone. If not, you can still communicate with the physiotherapist by typing questions into the chat function on Zoom.

The MAP coordinator will send you an email invitation to the webinar. If you are using a desktop computer, laptop or tablet with Windows, you should be able to join the webinar by following the link in the email. If necessary, you will be prompted to install Zoom. Follow the online instructions to do this.

The link at the bottom of this page has helpful instructions for joining an online MAP session on Zoom. It also tells you how to leave the class at the end of the session.

If you are using an Android tablet or Android or Apple mobile phone, you will need to go to your device's store (Google Play or Apple store). Then search for "zoom" and install Zoom Cloud Meetings.

Exercise participation

By choosing to take part in this programme, you accept responsibility to safely manage your own exercises at home.

When you do the exercises, you should wear clothes that are loose and comfortable. You should wear flat-soled shoes that are enclosed and supportive.

If you have a lot of pain when you do the exercise or you feel a sharp pain, you should stop and ask your MAP physiotherapist for advice. You should also get advice if you have pain that is worse than usual the day after you do the exercises.

As well as the exercises you will learn at online MAP, there are some online exercise videos you can follow at home.
