Healthy eating programmes

Most people would like to eat healthy food and to cook healthy food for their families. But there is a lot of conflicting information about what food is healthy. There is also pressure to buy fast food and processed food.

The programmes in this section are designed to help people learn:

Affordable Fruit & Vege Group

Non-profit group operating in the southeast of Christchurch. Provides weekly bags of fresh seasonal fruit of vegetables for $12 or $6. Bags are usually 60% vegetables and 40% fruit.

Appetite for Life

This is a free six-week weight management and healthy lifestyle programme.

This started as a partnership between the Christchurch Cathedral and Community and Public Health, but is now run as a standalone organisation by the Healthy Life Trust. It used to be called the Fruit and Vege Co-op. It helps families buy affordable seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables.

The project provides a pack of seasonal fruit and vegetables for $12 to $15.

Simply Cooking – These cooking classes are held in terms two and four and run for four weeks. They are designed to help stretch the budget. They also provide tips on how to cook wholesome and economical meals.

Kids in the Kitchen Workshop – this is run as part of KidsFest during the July school holidays.

Salvation Army Linwood cooking classes

These classes run every school term for six weeks on Wednesdays from 9:30 am to 12 noon.

They have a focus on budget cooking and health education. They are suitable for all ages. Please bring a cold coin donation.

Senior Chef

This is a free eight-week cooking course for people aged 65 and over.
