What is blood glucose?

Glucose is the sugar that your body uses for energy. When diabetes develops, you have more glucose in your blood stream than usual.

Carbohydrates are important foods, as they give us energy and fibre, and make us feel full. Many healthy foods, such as fruit and vegetables, rice, potatoes, pasta, and bread contain carbohydrates.

Sugar is a type of carbohydrate, so foods that contain a lot of sugar are high in carbohydrates.

When our bodies break down carbohydrates, they turn them into glucose. The glucose then enters our bloodstream and we can use it for energy. The level of glucose in our bloodstream is controlled by a hormone called insulin.

In prediabetes and diabetes, our insulin can no longer control our blood glucose levels, which then get too high.
