Splenectomy for children

The spleen is an organ in your abdomen (tummy) that helps your body fight off infections. Splenectomy is the medical term for the removal of your spleen.

Some children need to have their spleen removed as it's not working properly. Sometimes it needs to be removed after it has been injured.

People without spleens have less immunity against certain infections. So it's important that they get the right vaccinations and antibiotics throughout their lives. If you take your child to see a doctor or nurse who doesn't know them, tell them if your child has had a splenectomy.
