Dental care for school children

Primary and intermediate school children (year 1 to year 8) get free dental care in dental vans that visit schools, and in local community clinics. The free service operates during school terms, and the school lets parents know when it is available. If your child needs more complicated care or orthodontic treatment, the dental service will arrange referral to a private dentist or, if your child is eligible, to specialist services at Christchurch Hospital.

When schools are closed, you can contact the Community Dental Service for emergency dental care by phoning 0800‑825‑583. If the Community Dental Service is unavailable, children aged under 18 can get dental care at the Family Dental Centre in Greymouth, phone (03) 768‑6243, or Westport Dental Clinic, phone (03) 789‑8901.
