During your pregnancy, you will be offered blood tests to check for anaemia (low red blood cells).
The commonest cause of anaemia in pregnancy is low iron levels, which is known as iron deficiency anaemia.
If you have low iron, your midwife or lead maternity carer (LMC) may advise you to take iron supplements. But you can also increase the amount of iron in what you eat and drink.
You can find out more about getting enough iron in How to get your daily iron.
