Weight-loss programmes & resources

Many programmes are available to help you lose weight. Some programmes are online, others involve meeting in person. The benefits and costs of these programmes vary.

We know that the most successful programmes are those that teach you how to eat healthily and be more active for the rest of your life.

Recommended programmes

Low-carbohydrate diets

Cutting down on carbohydrate-rich foods can help some people to lose weight. But a low-carbohydrate diet is no better for weight loss than a low-fat diet, or any other diet that restricts your calories. If you choose to follow a low-carbohydrate diet it’s important you don’t completely cut out carbohydrates, as you need some to help your brain work. If you have diabetes and you want to follow a low-carbohydrate diet talk to your GP first. They can refer you to a dietitian.

You can find out more information about a low-carbohydrate diet in the CSIRO low-carb diet book. You can buy the book online or through book stores

Fitness and weight-loss apps

There are lots of apps available that you can use to track what you eat and how active you are. Some smartphones already come with apps built in. Using an app along with weight-loss counselling from a health professional may help you to lose weight.

However, there are no guidelines or regulations for these apps. Also, some aren't suitable for New Zealand. Look for an app that includes New Zealand foods and measures food in grams not ounces. Recommended apps include MyFitnessPal and Calorie Counter.
