There are many weight-loss programmes and many diets and eating plans to help you lose weight.

The most successful weight-loss programmes and eating plans are those that teach you how to eat healthily and be more active for the rest of your life.

Some weight-loss programmes are online, others involve meeting in person. The benefits and costs of these programmes vary. The following programmes meet the Ministry of Health's guidelines for weight-loss programmes.

Diets and eating plans for weight loss

There are many different diets and eating plans to help you lose weight. These include intermittent fasting, plant-based diets, low-carb diets, low-fat diets, the Mediterranean diet and the Weight Watchers diet. All these diets can be effective for weight loss, but you should choose one that suits your lifestyle and food preferences. This will help you stick to it in the long term.

Fitness and weight-loss apps

There are lots of apps available that you can use to track what you eat and how active you are. Some smartphones already come with apps built in. Using an app along with weight-loss counselling from a health professional may help you to lose weight.

But there are no guidelines or regulations for these apps, and some aren't suitable for New Zealand. Look for an app that includes New Zealand foods and measures food in grams not ounces. Recommended apps include MyFitnessPal and Calorie Counter.
