Emergency & after-hours medical care

Medical emergency (such as heart attack, car crash, stroke)

If you, or someone near you is having a medical emergency, phone 111 and ask for an ambulance.

If you are deaf, you can use the emergency text phone number 0800‑16‑16‑16.

In a medical emergency, you might be taken to the Hospital Emergency Department. The Emergency Department provides lifesaving treatment and urgent medical attention to those with serious injuries or illness. This page has videos showing how the Emergency Department operates.

If it is not a medical emergency, the ambulance crew may give you first aid, then recommend you see your general practice team or go to an after-hours clinic for any further care you need.

Medical advice

If you are uncertain how serious an injury or illness is, call your general practice team or Healthline on 0800-611-116 for advice. Healthline is a free, 24 hour a day telephone health advice service.

Free phone advice lines:

If you or a family member are disabled, you can also contact the Disability Helpline (phone 0800-11-12-13 or text 8988) for advice and information. The helpline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week (between 8 pm and 8 am, calls are answered by a trained member of the Healthline team). You can also access the helpline using the New Zealand Relay Service.

Mental health services

If you need urgent or emergency mental health care, or if you are worried about the mental health of a friend or family member, please call emergency psychiatric services on 0800-467-846.

Poisoning

In case of poisoning, contact the Poison Information Service immediately: 0800‑POISON (0800‑764‑766), or seek medical advice from another health professional.
