National Health Index (NHI) numbers

The National Health Index (NHI) number is a unique number used to identify people in the New Zealand health system. Anyone who has had contact with the New Zealand health system should have an NHI number. For example, ABC1235.

Finding your NHI number

There are several ways to find your NHI number, including on:

If you cannot find your NHI, a health professional may be able to help. For example, your general practice team, pharmacist, chiropractor, dietitian, physiotherapist or podiatrist.

If you are new to New Zealand, you will be given an NHI number the first time you use a health or disability support service.
